Reversible Lies

The title of this blog has been influenced hugely by Al Gore's award winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and recent catastrophic events in Japan. May our prayers, well wishes and thoughts be with them all at this time. "Nuclear Is Not A Sustainable Answer", nor has it ever been even prior to sad situation in Japan, earthquakes, tsunamis's then the potential threat of a nuclear reactor meltdown, not one but two. Bad luck perhaps comes in fives and not threes, as the markets have reacted and been impacted as a direct result of these initial devastating and catastrophic natural disaster that have now become man made disasters that continue the burden the people. How volatile even the third largest economy in the World can be in the wake of a quake and eye of the storm, plus an energy source with early links with the nuclear weapons industry. The psychological implications speak for themselves, I must say out of all the natural disasters I could barely watch, Japan's seemed to be the most devastating and prolonged, with calamity after catastrophe, plus overwhelming sadness and distress and continued stress, plus worry.
We Great Britain the United Kingdom as I'm a Unionist in favour of partnering with our cousins, relations and neighbours, have also been faced with our own issues such as Dounreay,Caithness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dounreay who's nuclear store was leaking. Of which radioactive waste contaminated the ground, which had even been leaking into the water and sea "Cod Haddock Fish & Chips from Peterhead anybody?" Which eventually lead to it's decommissioning, not before 650 cubic meters of radioactivity waste was under water in to the North Sea.

More recently Cumbria's Sellafeild http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sellafield nuclear plant had been given a formal caution for radioactive leaks which are believed to have gone undetected for more than 14 months or so. I quote an extract via Stuart Page the EA's Nuclear Regulator said "While the environmental impact of the incident was minimal, a formal caution is warranted to reflect the seriousness with which we view such failings" Familiar pattern and occurrences perhaps of those at Dounreay? Controversy has dogged them both, because of discharges of radioactive waste and material, mainly accidental but some alleged to have been deliberate.
Then Loch Long http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Long fears of public danger due to radioactive leaks, the list is endless and there is a consistent and regular pattern emerging here, that the risks far out-way the benefits and future returns. Shortism is out wavered by the longterm implications, costs and impact beyond environmental consequences, what will it take another Chernobyl disaster http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster. Need we go onto or into disposal and future waste of radioactive material, probably not, one would certainly not think so. However a refreshing glimmer of encouragement and hope had been the level of engagement accomplished via the petition to save our forests which took a U-Turn when Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman told the country "I'm sorry, we got this one wrong" http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/we-got-it-wrong-on-forests-says-spelman-2217731.html well you don't say. It would seem that you've got quite allot wrong historically but on this occasion the general public has reacted and engaged, plus petitioned against errors in your judgement. I would like to think and hope and pray, not just the hippies, or environmentalist but generally savvy and informed unionists/brits that realise that our heritage offers more than a mere sanctuary for picnics, taking walks with our children or pets and loved ones. It's a guardian and protector of an equilibrium, a balance and harmony in a stable condition in which forces cancel one another, a state or feeling of mental balance, composure in an otherwise unbalanced and un-composed World.
The truth is there are other alternatives to nuclear but like the Great British Victorian Sewerage System that caters for the vast and expansive modern infrastructure needs of London, it needs further and future ethical investment. Thank heavens they designed and built the way they did, it has served the past and current population in London well. However what these current turbulent times and challenges created by shortism views and opinion have substantiated is that the solutions utilised, such as nuclear are not really adequate or even safe for that matter and sustainable to meet our growing energy demands and needs. Whilst being kind to their locations, inhabitants and our planet.
