Addressing the Energy-Water-Food challenge

By 2050, the population of Earth is likely to reach nine billion. As living standards improve, many will also rise out of poverty and live longer, healthier lives.

Yet the world’s growing prosperity will also put stresses on energy, water and food supplies - all of which are closely intertwined. Water is needed for almost all forms of energy production; energy is needed to treat and transport water; and both water and energy are needed to grow food.

In the coming decades, these vital resources will come under even greater pressure. According to the United Nations, by 2030 the world’s growing population and increased prosperity will push up global demand for water by 30%, energy by 40% and food by 50%.

My question is what is Shell doing verses other corporation to exceed & excel in attaining or working towards equilibrium & balance to safe guard our depleting natural finite resources?

Hi Scott, thanks for your question. Through partnerships with environmental experts and by using new technologies we are finding ways to help reduce the impact of our operations on the environment. We plan to spend $100 billion from 2011-2014 to support new energy production. We are entering more challenging environments to unlock new resources and boosting production from existing fields so that the rate of depletion might not be that once thought. At the same time, we are using new technologies and an innovative approach to limit our impact on the environment and find effective ways to engage with communities near to our operations. Considering our impact on the environment runs through everything we do.

Shell's webchat, led by Jeremy Bentham and an expert panel, took questions from participants across the globe on the recent thinking from Shell's New Lens Scenarios. It explored what the world might look like over the 21st century and how the energy mix could develop given various social, economic and political trends.

From a Public Relations perspective as one of the largest petroleum organisations in the world it would be prudent, cautious & conservative, plus Eco-Ethical kudos to execute, perform & deliver a balanced equilibrium in energy terms i.e. carbon & clean 50/50 mix. Obviously there are associated benefits over & above environmental attributes, such as economic and financial. Whilst QU & ARK hasn't shared our allocentric “Community Minded” concept, vision & dreams for a balanced world & equilibrium I can categorically assure you there is not an organisation in the world doing what we are about to embark on. Recent world events have proved that unless social, economic and political trends are met unrest & dissatisfaction, plus turmoil will prevail. Therefore we all need to be Eco-Socially Responsible in meeting consumers expectation beyond a mere & pure monetary perspective.

Thanks Scott, what comes out of the scenario work is the need for collaboration between governments, NGOs, businesses to cope with resource stresses related to energy, water and food. The demand for water energy and food could rise by 40-50% in 2030. Both scenarios have their own challenges though.

Thanks for your question Scott. In Mountains policies tend to drive macro responses whereas in Oceans market forces dominate, so we may see more micro solutions emerge, particularly as energy prices are expected to be higher, incentivizing consumers.

Thank you Richard Moore for your reply QU & ARK have identified, qualified, quantified, plus rectified, whilst constantly verifying micro alternative energy sources harnessing Earth, Water, Air, and Fire that are cost effective but more to the point efficient.

It is fair to say that the protection of green belts are as vitally important to Shell as they are to the rest of humanity. Whilst we cannot bulldozer the current inefficient built environment. We can all be responsible for the evolution of the next built environment i.e. "The Paradigm Shift."

Hi Scott, I would say it is important to Shell too. We analyse the differences between compact and urban-sprawl cities. A supplement publication on compact cities will be published in some time, in which we will share our findings.

Beyond the mere principle value of itself and Co-operative/Consortium Partners, who share the same values and principles towards executing, performing and delivering overwhelming and unconditional current pledgeholders value, future shareholders and anticipated investors value and returns, beyond mere monetary values and principles but more importantly Ecological and Environmental dividends and returns. Towards making a substantial and prolific difference, through evoking, plus provoking necessary change in attitude, behaviour, culture towards the ecology, environment and the built environment.
